Connect with the Orisha of the Waters
Around the first full moon of each year, this annual beach side rite honours and acknowledges the Orisha known as Yemaya (“Mother of the Fishes”), who travelled with the Yoruba people, stolen from West Africa, to the distant lands of the Americas.
Also known as Yemoja, Iyemọja or Yemọnja, Yemaya is often depicted as a mermaid, and is associated with the moon (in some diaspora communities), water, and feminine mysteries. She also is said to govern everything pertaining to women; parenting, child safety, love, and healing. from Yoruba to distant lands.
On Thursday, 25 January 2024, we will gather on the grassed area near the Largs Bay Sailing Club (opposite Everard Street, Lady Gowrie Drive, Largs Bay) around 7.45pm. We will head down to the beach around 8.00pm, with the rite to honour Yemaya commencing shortly after.
In this informal rite, we ask for Yemaya’s blessings of all the world’s waterways, sea creatures, and all other beings that fall under Her protection.
As this is an open to the public event, attendees are asked to bring:
:: A biodegradable offering to Yemaya (flowers, crystal, a pebble or small stone, etc) that will be thrown into the ocean,
:: An open mind, and
:: A willingness to participate in any chanting.
The wearing of white or light blue clothing is encouraged as these are Yemaya’s favourite colours.
There will also be watermelon (Yemaya’s favourite food) to share afterwards.
Cost: A gold coin/loose change charitable donation will be collected.
All attendees are reminded to be respectful towards other attendees. Children are most welcome to attend, however they must be supervised by their parents/guardians.
